500th tenancy joins CitySwitch

CitySwitch Green Office has reached a major milestone this month, securing its 500th office tenant as part of the program.

The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) is the most recent signing, committing over 21,000 square meters of office space across four of its East Melbourne offices.

City of Melbourne’s Environment Portfolio Chair, Councillor Arron Wood, said the addition of DEECD was a major boost for the program.

This milestone also saw the program in Victoria reach 500,000 sqm of total floor space, achieving nearly a quarter of the 2.057 million sqm signed up nationally.

“We already have a number of high profile corporate participants on board in Melbourne, and we’re thrilled that the program is now gaining interest from the public sector,” Cr Wood said.

“It’s programs like CitySwitch that contribute to a sustainability revolution in our commercial sector. Not only is the program a platform for building owners to provide a healthy, efficient environment, but it empowers staff to make changes in their day-to-day activities that will have impacts that go way beyond the workplace.”

Executive Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability Division of DEECD, Chris Keating, said the Department is excited to work with CitySwitch to develop a forward thinking approach to environmental sustainability, particularly in the area of energy reduction.

“The Department is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its operations and promoting the importance of environmental sustainability as a permanent and accountable part of working life,” Mr Keating said.

DEECD will now work to bring its four East Melbourne properties up to a minimum 4 star NABERS Energy rating. This rating system measures energy efficiency as well as covering other areas like water usage, waste management and indoor quality of a building.

CitySwitch is a growing national partnership between business, state and local government across Australia. The program is helping tenants to reduce energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions, with reductions through building tuning, retrofit and changes in staff behaviour significantly reducing businesses’ environmental impact, providing energy security (especially during extreme temperatures), and saving tenants money on bills.

Other recent joiners to the program include professional services company Towers Watson, energy management consultants Carbonetix, along with Echo Entertainment Group, who represent the first major entertainment group to commit nationally to setting ambitious energy and waste reduction targets.

CitySwitch is a free program for commercial office tenants across Australia to access information and free consulting services to assist them to improve their operations.
