CitySwitch National Award winners announced

National CitySwitch Award Wnner - CBRE

Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 National CitySwitch awards, which recognise organisations leading the charge to improve office energy efficiency.

Chair of City of Melbourne's Environment Portfolio, Councillor Arron Wood, presented the awards  before an audience of business, government and community leaders at the Spiegeltent in Melbourne.

“This year’s national winners made a commitment to reduce their office energy use and delivered inspiring environmental improvements,” Cr Wood said.

“Across Australia, CitySwitch signatories reported undertaking 840 energy saving actions this year, which resulted in $9 million in electricity savings.”

CitySwitch offers free practical advice and support to help commercial office tenants achieve a four star or higher National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) Energy rating.

This year’s national winners are:

  • CBRE  - National Signatory of the Year 2014
  • Echo Entertainment Group - National New Signatory of the Year 2014
  • City of Greater Geelong - Future Proofing Geelong, Ryrie Centre Property and 235 & 237 Ryrie Street, Geelong - National Partnership of the Year 2014

CBRE was recognised for demonstrating a 44 per cent decrease in energy use.

Cr Wood said the Future Proofing Geelong project saw building owners, 12 tenants and The City of Greater Geelong work together to achieve 43 per cent of their goal of 219 tonnes of CO2e savings in a year.

“I commend the leadership shown by the City of Greater Geelong in working to reduce office operating costs through increased energy efficiency. This is one of a number of measures taken by the Council to revitalise Geelong and protect the city from future price increases in electricity,” said Cr Wood.

The Victorian Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure was also commended for a recycling initiative which reduced office stationary purchasing by 20 per cent.

The CitySwitch program has more than 600 office tenancies committed to reducing their energy use, which represents over 12 per cent of all city centre office space in Australia.

“CitySwitch signatories in Australia have saved a total of 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions since the program began in 2005, which is equal to driving a car to Saturn or making 13 return car trips to Mars,” Cr Wood said.

Why CitySwitch is hopepunk in action

“Climate strike” may have been picked by Collins Dictionary as its word of the year. But I think another contender –“hopepunk” – best captures the spirit of CitySwitch and our achievements in 2019. The need for hopepunk – a movement that celebrates the pursuit of positive aims in the face of adversity – has never been more real.
