Melbourne business makes a switch to more sustainable habits

This year’s CitySwitch Awards were announced to more than 100 leaders from Melbourne’s business community at a ceremony last night, with winners crossing the spectrum, from a major law firm to a community organisation.

Environment Portfolio Chair Councillor Arron Wood said 28,000 tonnes of carbon emissions had been saved across Victoria this year through the highly successful program.

“CitySwitch Victoria started as a small program five years ago and has grown to support 187 businesses covering more than 470,000m of office space across the state. In the last year alone the equivalent of six MCGs of commercial office space have been added to the program,” Cr Wood said.

“These businesses are making some impressive carbon emissions savings and proving that sustainability in the workplace is possible.

“I applaud this year’s winners – community organisation Baptcare, legal firm Norton Rose Fullbright and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation – for their commitment to incorporating sustainable behaviours in their day-to-day operations and making real savings, not only for the environment but financially as well.

“These businesses should be very proud of their achievements. Their efforts show that is sustainability is now well and truly part of mainstream business practice, making them more competitive, reducing the environmental impact of our city and supporting their employees who make it happen,” Cr Wood said.

Baptcare Sustainability Coordinator Liam Henderson said “the connections that we have made through our involvement in CitySwitch and the resources we have been able to utilise have made it possible to achieve what we have in sustainability”.

CitySwitch supports businesses in the city and in the broader Victorian commercial building sector to better manage their energy use and to educate staff on the possibilities for better business sustainability.

This year, a number of CitySwitch businesses bought enough GreenPower to service over 320 Victorian homes and more NABERS ratings, which measures the energy efficiency signatories, were done than ever.

More information regarding each of the winners will be posted to this site on 28 November.

Powering Australia from 100% renewable energy is no longer ambitious. We have more sun, wind and hydro resources than coal, gas and oil combined. And with vision and ambition, we can become the world’s renewable energy superpower.
