RICS launch new energy efficiency tools

In July this year RICS will launch a new guide, together with mobile and web tools, to help SME businesses understand the office leasing process and energy efficiency.

Included is a mobile and desktop app which helps compare energy, occupancy and lighting costs of a space for lease as well as track energy bills. An accompanying guide will outline the key priorities and best practice criteria for finding a new workspace.

The project received funding from the Australian Government Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism as part of the Energy Efficiency Information Grants Programme and includes the below features.

The RICS ‘Leasa’ App will help time poor SME commercial office tenants to:

  • compare and rank different space available for lease
  • calculate and compare the occupancy costs of space for lease
  • calculate and compare tenancy energy costs of space for lease
  • calculate and compare tenancy lighting costs of space for lease
  • search the BEEC database  track tenancy energy bills
  • understand simply how choosing different space and/or changing other tenancy variables (lighting efficiency, for example) affects the energy efficiency and/or cost of that space.

The App will be available for the  Apple IPhone/IPad, Google Android Mobile devices and for any desktop web browser.

To support the mobile and desktop application tools RICS has also produced a simple, user friendly guide - ‘Choosing and Managing Energy Efficient Space – A best practice Guide for SME Commercial Office Tenants’, which explains how to use the application tools but also provides best practice advice on;

  • understanding the leasing process and where to find the best independent advice
  • deciding whether to stay in an existing space
  • prioritising key features of different space to lease
  • what to look for when visiting tenancies
  • what to include in negotiations with your existing or new landlord
  • making informed decisions about different tenancies
  • understanding total occupancy costs
  • why energy efficiency is important for tenants
  • how to choose an energy efficient tenancy
  • how to manage and improve energy efficiency in a tenancy
  • energy efficiency and carbon footprinting and management in tenancies.
