Western Australia green office winners set national benchmark

CitySwitch Perth Award winners
The RAC, Western Australia Police and Savills Australia were announced 2013 WA Award winners at yesterday’s annual CitySwitch Progress Report and Awards Ceremony at Council House, recognising outstanding achievements in office energy efficiency.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said these signatories have excelled in their commitment to the “green office” through CitySwitch - a national program run predominantly by local governments which delivers high value, zero cost support services and advice for commercial office tenants to improve their energy efficiency.

“These West Australian signatories have gone beyond a commitment to reducing their carbon impact. Through CitySwitch they are setting the national benchmark,” the Lord Mayor said.

2012 National Signatory of the Year, the RAC was awarded its second consecutive WA Signatory of the Year award today, dual winner with Western Australia Police in the category for signatories over 2000 square metres.

The RAC was recognised for its demonstrated continued dedication to sustainability; its Resource Efficiency Action Plan; reduced and improved lighting; fostering awareness and behaviour changes through internal communications; and integrating emissions data with existing building management systems.

Western Australia Police were awarded for demonstrating how improvements to older buildings can save energy and how sustainability can be imbedded in organisations where such measures are outside the core business. Internal system changes, behavioural changes and raising awareness through real time public data also gained them merit.

Savills Australia was awarded WA Signatory of the Year in the under 2000 square metres category for demonstrating a broad range of initiatives including energy efficient lighting upgrades and innovative IT management (e.g. hot water system timers and centralised electronic equipment control), leading to energy savings of 24,000 KiloWatt hours.

This year’s winners are among a growing pool of 50 WA CitySwitch signatories representing over 270,000 square metres of office space across 51 office tenancies.

Lord Mayor Scaffidi said the City values the significant contribution of all signatories and their ongoing commitment to the program, and looks forward to many more joining these green business leaders.

“As CitySwitch continues to grow and provide networks for ideas sharing and we educate business on financing energy efficiency upgrades without impacting their bottom line, what we’re moving towards is a corporate culture in which sustainability is thoroughly embedded,” said the Lord Mayor

“CitySwitch fills the gap between wanting and needing to reduce our environmental impact by giving business the tools to do so. It’s an initiative that’s good for business, good for people, good for the planet, and I’d encourage every Perth business to be a part of it.”
