In Sydney, accommodation and event venues are responsible for 21 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, 14 per cent of potable water consumption and 47 per cent of the city’s commercial waste and yet, the accommodation sector does not yet have an established culture of attaining ratings or third party sustainability certification.
By asking your accommodation provider if they have an environmental rating, you can help create the customer demand that will ensure the sector plays its role in improving environmental performance. City of Sydney’s Sustainable Destinations team has developed a useful backgrounder to ratings and certification in the accommodation sector so that you can be sure your hotel is measuring, monitoring and lowering their environmental impact.
